About the Free Character Counter

Some places only give you a fixed number of characters: a tweet on X is 280 characters, an SMS is 160, and a Google meta description works best under 160. Going over means your text gets cut off. Our character counter shows your count live and tells you how many characters you have left for the limit you choose, so you can trim your words before you post.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, in the Characters count. “Hello world” is 11 characters because the space counts. The Characters (no spaces) count is 10 for the same text.

What is the character limit for a tweet on X?

280 characters for a standard post. Choose “Tweet / X post (280)” in the limit list to see how many characters you have left.

Does the character counter count emojis?

Yes. Each emoji counts as characters in the total. Some emojis are made of more than one code unit, so the count can be higher than the number of visible symbols.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?
